What I Did:

I applied for SSD May 28 of this year, 2010. I researched the Social Security web site for information. I found a section on respiratory disease. What I got from it was that FEV1 had to be 1.25 or less. I think mine is 1.23. I just went ahead and applied anyway, because I know sooner or later, with the way COPD advances, we will all be there soon, right? I filled out the application on line -- was time consuming, but you can stop and restart where you left off. The very day I submitted it, the local office called me to ask a couple of questions and said to mail the release form to them so they could request my doctor records. So the ball is rolling

How I Did It:

There is a list on the website telling you all that you need to have to start the application. Go to www.socialsecurity/adultdisabilityreport.gov It was really totally helpful. It takes 90 to 120 days she said. After they get everything they send it to your state office and they request your records and a processor reviews your case. So that's the beginning. You can even appeal online. My brother in-law applied for his and got it pretty quickly. He has COPD. So log on and apply and good luck

Lessons Learned

  • So far it has been easy, but will keep you posted on my progress.
