Functional Residual Capacity (FRC)

Updated December 19, 2008

Definition: Functional residual capacity (FRC) refers to the volume of air left in the lungs after a normal, passive exhalation. It is mainly determined by the balance between the forces of the lung and chest wall.

An increase in FRC is associated with severe airway obstruction, as seen in COPD. FRC can be determined during the taking of lung volume measurements.
