Definition: Bronchopulmonary hygiene, also known as pulmonary toilet, is a technique designed to help clear mucus and secretions from the trachea and bronchial tree by using a combination of deep breathing, incentive spirometry, postural drainage and percussion.
Bronchopulmonary hygiene helps to prevent atelectasis (collapsing of the air sacs of the lungs) and respiratory infections. It is often used for people who have COPD, pneumonia and cystic fibrosis.
