Definition: An anticholinergic is a type of bronchodilator medication that is commonly used in the treatment of COPD. Bronchodilators work by relaxing the airways, making it easier to breathe.

Anticholinergics have excellent bronchodilator effects with minimal side effects. They are the bronchodilator or choice for those patients who cannot use beta-agonists or methylxanthines due to underlying heart disease.

Anticholinergics are only available through the inhalation route using either a nebulizer or metered-dose inhaler.
