Question: What is a Bronchoscopy?
Answer: A bronchoscopy is a lung test whereby the lungs can be visualized through a camera that is attached to a device called a bronchoscope. The bronchoscope is inserted into your airway, usually through your nose and can see images of your larynx, trachea and bronchioles.

The purpose of a bronchoscopy is:

  • to examine tissues or collect fluid that is secreted from your lungs
  • to determine the location and extent of your lung damage
  • to obtain a sample of your lung tissue for further study
  • to discover whether a tumor can be resected (dealt with surgically)
  • to diagnose places in your lungs that are bleeding
