The holiday season is upon us and with it, comes holiday parties and social gatherings designed to celebrate cheerful togetherness and camaraderie. But a holiday handshake or hug can be the start of much more than a blissful holiday celebration for those who have COPD. Tis' the season for the flu, which puts people with COPD at risk for a worsening of COPD symptoms, commonly referred to as a COPD exacerbation.
The American Lung Association recommends that all people with COPD-and those in regular contact with someone who has COPD-get a flu shot. A flu shot can help prevent an episode of COPD exacerbation which could ultimately send you to the hospital for the holidays. If you have not already done so, be sure to get contact your healthcare provider to get a flu shot as soon as possible.
For the avid, holiday health enthusiast, here are 5 tips for staying healthy this holiday season:
- Wash your hands--hand washing is the number one way to prevent infection and as such, can help prevent COPD exacerbation.
- Avoid contact with anyone who has the flu--this includes family members, friends and co-workers.
- Get enough sleep--take cat naps during the day if you have to, as prolonged lack of sleep can leave you vulnerable to illness.
- Exercise--the benefits of exercise are numerous, including reducing stress commonly associated with illness.
- Eat right--a healthy diet can help you fight chest infections, which are common among people who have COPD.
